Business Process Improvement and IT Requirements Services

Proreq Consulting offers business process improvement and IT business requirements services.

We use a straightforward approach to map and identify improvements to business processes.

Once complete, we can develop detailed requirements for IT system implementations using the business processes as a structure for organizing the requirements.

Business Process Improvement

There can be significant value in analyzing and streamlining an organization’s business processes, however business process improvement initiatives are often undertaken without a clear understanding of what is trying to be accomplished, what areas/scope of the organization are to be reviewed, and when to stop process analysis activities.

Often, the scope of the analysis expands into areas not initially intended, and analysis continues into greater and greater levels of detail that provide limited value. The end result can be a lot of money spent, many documents and diagrams created with questionable value, and lack of clarity on what was accomplished.

Proreq Consulting uses a straightforward approach to business process improvement that emphasizes:

  • Clearly defining the scope of the processes to be reviewed before diving into detailed analysis

  • Ending analysis/mapping effort at a level of detail where additional effort would provide diminishing returns

  • Identifying high-value, implementable improvements

The steps in our approach are:

  1. Confirm the purpose of the process mapping/improvement initiative (e.g. efficiency, standardization, flexibility, etc).

  2. Identify high level business processes and perform an initial assessment.

  3. Confirm scope for further analysis.

  4. Map processes in more detail.

  5. Identify process improvement opportunities, including activities to:

  • Stop doing

  • Start doing

  • Do differently

6. Develop final “to be” process maps.

IT Business/System Requirements

Proreq Consulting has extensive experience developing IT system requirements. This can be provided as a standalone service or in addition to process mapping/improvement activities.

If business process mapping and improvements were done at the front end of an IT implementation project, the processes and activities identified are used as the structure for developing the detailed system requirements.

Requirements are generally written in epic/user story format but can be done in other formats if preferred (user stories, etc).

If using agile methodology, a business process will generally correspond to an epic and steps in the business process will correspond to sub-epics and users stories.
